How to Win People’s Trust
Trust is something that is not easily agreed away; you have to earn it. Also, just as people can earn trust, they can also lose it.
When people trust you, this can provide you so many compensation such as:
1. You can influence others nearly effortlessly. Initiating change and introducing new thoughts can be quite a challenge but if people trust you, this should not be a problem.
2. You can get people’s support. You can be sure that others will back you up in situations wherein you will need others to help push for something such as a recommendation or a proposal.
3. You are perceived as a leader; thus, others will follow you. One of the key supplies of every leader is that he should be able to win the trust of others. Leading people is a lot less complicated when you have already established trust with them.
4. You can win the admiration of many. When people look up to you, you have the power to inspire and motivate them. This is most vital for relationships involving parents and children, as well as team leaders and team members.
5. You can convince others to believe in your thoughts and suggestions. Getting others to agree with you is not the simplest thing to do, especially if your thoughts and suggestions are new to them. Rejection is common in these situations. But, if people trust you, they know that you have their best interest in mind.
Trust is a vital ingredient for any type of relationship to work, be it relationship with your spouse, children, parents, friends, colleagues, bosses, clients, and customers. Without trust, all of these relationships are bound to fail.
Now that we have established the value of trust, the next thing to do is to find out how we can get people to trust you, which is to build credibility.
This personal quality can be bought in many ways. One is to permanently be a person known for being honest. Telling a lie or hiding vital information can sincerely hurt a person’s credibility. Permanently be honest and seek the truth in any situation. When people see your honesty even in the tiniest things, you are building credibility, thereby gaining their trust. Another way to become credible is to continuously upgrade your skills and knowledge. People find a person more credible if he is knowledgeable and proficient in a particular area. If a salesperson can confidently educate a potential customer about a product, then it is probable that he would buy it. Finally, take responsibility for yours and other people’s mistakes. When you can be courageous enough to admit your own mistakes instead of blaming others, you increase the chances of winning the trust of people around you. Responsible individuals win respect, and when there is respect, trust is very close behind. But, if you constantly blame other people, you are just making others become more suspicious of you and this is not going to win you any “trust” points at all.
