If your thoughts are focused on lack, then that is what you are going to receive. Your lack is apparent, but your focus should not be on what you don’t have, but on what you want to have. Some people go into business to beat their competition, but that is not what the Law or Science of Getting Rich adheres to. Don’t ever limit yourself. If you believe you have limitations, you won’t go much further than those limitations that you concoct in your mind. But how many of you have read, or even heard about, a book that was published from a much earlier time?  The principles of the law of attraction aren’t exactly new.  And thinking to grow rich was not exactly Napoleon’s original idea.

In 1910, Wallace D. Wattles wrote his collection of thoughts at the time in his classic book “ The Science of Getting Rich”.  He says in his book, that his is the only book that you will need to read on the subject, and just to put any others aside for the moment.

I found the book to be a bit of a challenge to read, and to stick with until the end.  The language is, of course, from an earlier time.  So the construction of the sentences is at sometimes, seemingly very formal.  Good writing, but definitely not conversationally casual.

One of the main focuses of the book is the concept of  “a certain way”.  He says that you must first, learn to think in a “certain way”.  Then to follow up by taking action, also in a “certain way”.   His definition of a “certain way”, I believe, carries two meanings.  The first being, to think and to do in a specific and very particular fashion, and the second part of the definition, as having a sense of certainty about the expected outcome resulting from your efforts.

He definitely conveys the message that action is necessary.  So much of all the popular law of attraction talk these days seems to just be about thinking.  Thinking and mindset are both very important. But don’t forget to take action, too.

And be sure when you do, to take action in a “certain way”.

Feeney made his fortune when he co-founded Duty Free Shoppers (DFS) in 1960 and it became the world’s largest duty-free retail chain making him a billionaire. His personal motto was “I set out to work hard, not get rich”. He did both. He quietly became a billionaire and since the mid-1980s he has been quietly giving away all his money.

One Idea That Never Changed
“I had one idea that never changed in my mind – that you should use your wealth to help people,” Feeney said. This is the key to the enormous fortune Feeney amassed. 
Feeney’s modest, blue-collar Irish-American background stood him in good stead. Reportedly witty, self-deprecating, frugal and astute; these characteristics helped him greatly in growing his business. He often relied on his instincts in making business decisions and reveled in taking risks. He was also drawn towards the underdog, often reaching out to help people who were struggling.

As his fortune grew over the decades, his outward display of the trappings of wealth did not. He was extremely private and you might even say secretive about his charitable donations. He secretly gave almost all of it away through his foundation, Atlantic Philanthropies. He had only one condition when giving away his money and that was that his name was never to be mentioned by the benefactor.

Feeney has helped fund schools, hospitals, universities, medical research and human rights from the United States and Ireland to South Africa and Vietnam. Feeney is said to have been inspired by the great 19th century philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who incidentally was the inspiration for Napoleon Hill’s seminal wealth creation book, Think and Grow Rich.

The Billionaire Who Wasn’t
In 1997, Chuck Feeney called Judith Miller of the “New York Times” to correct a widely reported fact. He was not, as “Forbes” and others reported, one of the 400 richest Americans. He was worth a relatively modest million. Yes, he had been a billionaire however, but since 1984 he’d been quietly giving away all his money.

Feeney believes in improving the lives of people who need change the most. “Try it, you’ll like it”, he has said as regards giving. It’s like as if Feeney had decided earlier on in life that in return for achieving great wealth that his clear statement of intent was to give it all away in return. That you must clearly describe your major desire in life and clearly state what you intend to give in return for achieving this desire.

Increasing Life

You are neither destined to be poor nor rich. Life’s purpose is increasing life so we must get rich, so that we can live more. We must become creators rather than competing for what is already created. Supply is unlimited according to Wattles. So never allow yourself think for an instant that all the best building spots will be taken before you’re ready to build your house, unless you hurry!

How riches come to you is if your business transactions operate on the basis of fair exchange i.e. you give the buyer something of greater use value than the cash value you take. In addition, we must ask largely for what we want, have a clear picture in our mind and claim it as if it were already ours. In other words, we must dream big, see it clearly and behave as if we have already achieved the thing we desire in order for it to be. This is possibly the most powerful concept in the book and is explored in other books such as The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill.

A mental attitude of gratitude can be the one thing missing from people who live their lives rightly in all other. This lack of gratitude keeps them in poverty. Gratitude will ensure your thinking is that of supply as unlimited. Faith is born of gratitude. The grateful mind expects good things, and expectation becomes faith. It’s good to cultivate the habit of gratefulness and give thanks continuously. It can be a good idea to keep a gratitude diary on your bedside table and writing 3 things daily that you are grateful for. This will bring you into harmonious relations with the good in everything, and the good in everything will move toward you.

If you have read part 1 of this article called “The Science of Getting Rich – How Anyone Become Rich – Part 1″ then you will already have discovered that everybody has the right to be rich; that we must get rich in order that we can increase life and live more. We can do so by doing things in a certain way. Here in Part 2 we explore this concept further.

According the Wattles, you must be thinking in the Certain Way. By that he means having a clear and definite picture continually in your mind; the unshakable purpose and unwavering Faith that the thing you desire is already yours will bring it about.

To set about getting rich you must learn how to use the wall upon yourself. It’s important not to force others to do what you wish done. When you have the picture of your desire strong in your mind all things in the universe are stirred toward bringing what you want into being. There is no room for doubt or unbelief. You must guard your thoughts from poverty if you want to become rich. The poor cannot be helped through charity alone; they need inspiration. Getting rich is, according to Wattles, the best way of helping the poor.

Creation NOT Competition

Further use of the wall – you cannot attain wealth if you hold opposing images of poverty and wealth in your mind. So, there’s no point talking about past financial disasters if you want to focus on getting rich. Think of yourself as becoming rich, instead of growing out of poverty. Be creative, rather than competitive and you will attain riches.

It’s not enough to rely on thoughts alone. You must also be acting in the certain way so that you can take what is yours when it comes to you. By thought, the thing you want is bought to you; by action you receive it. Hold onto the vision of what you want and act now upon the people and things in your present environment. Put your whole mind into the present action. You cannot act in the past or indeed in the future as it hasn’t arrived yet.

You cannot foresee the results of even the most trivial act. Therefore, do every day all that can be done. This is what Wattles calls efficient action. However, don’t overwork or rush blindly into your business. It’s not the number of things you do, but the efficiency of each action that counts. If you spend your life doing each act efficiently, and putting power into it, you cannot fail. Your whole life will be a success and you will become rich. Use your leisure hours to use your imagination and develop your mind, focusing on developing the details of your vision.

Getting into the Right Business

You can become successful in any business if you have the right faculties and skills. These are your tools. However, it will be easier to succeed by getting into the right business and using these tools in the right way. It is best to select the business for which you have the best developed talent and ideally one which you have a strong desire for. Desire brings power. This will result in your getting rich more easily and also with the most satisfaction. You may have to spend time doing what you do not like in order that you make it possible to do what you want. The best way, generally, to change business or environment is through growth. Although, be ready to make a sudden change if the right opportunity is presented.

Being creative rather than competitive will mean you’ll never have to act hastily. If one space is taken, another one will open for you a little farther on. When in doubt, wait; contemplate your vision and cultivate gratitude. This will bring your mind into such close relationship with what Wattles calls, the Supreme, that you will make no mistake when you do act.

The Science of Getting Rich may be a hundred years old but Wattles’ ideas are as relevant today as they ever were.
