Soft skills are those skills that are needed to help you build a successful career. These comprise of traits and qualities that every person possesses to a certain degree, which means that there are people who have more developed soft skills than others. Soft skills can be grouped into two: personal attributes and interpersonal skills. The former include: positive thinking, honesty, sense of humor, integrity, responsibility, and stress management; the latter include: empathy, leadership, teamwork, and communication.

Why Do You Need to Enhance Your Soft Skills?

As previously mentioned, some people may have higher level of soft skills than others and honing these could help you move forward in your career. These traits and qualities are considered factors in determining job performance in a sense that you need it to effectively perform your job functions. When you can communicate well with others, you can iron out problems; if you have good interpersonal skills, adapting to people with different personalities will not be difficult.

In addition, when we are able to apply empathy and effective communication skills, it will not only boost our performance but it will also contribute to the organization’s performance. You will be able to win more customers, increase productivity, and promote collaboration, all of which will give a significant impact to the overall company performance.

Lastly, when you enhance your soft skills, you will empower yourself and give you a competitive edge over others. When you know how to deal with other people, it will not be hard for you to take charge of a team and to ensure everyone performs well. All these will point to you being good at what you do and this will be no doubt instrumental to your very own professional success.

How to Improve Soft Skills

Now that you have realized the essence of soft skills and what it can do for you, it is the perfect time to start taking steps towards enhancing what you possess at the moment. This begins by making a self-assessment. Find out what areas you need to improve on. Do you know how to communicate with others in a way that you can get your message across clearly? Are you empathetic towards customers, colleagues, superiors, and team members? Are you able to adapt well to change? Ask yourself these questions to help you identify your weak areas.

Once you have determined what these are, your next step is to take measures to improve. For example, if you are afraid to speak in front of others, you can work your way towards overcoming this by participating in social gatherings and even volunteering to facilitate meetings, presentations, trainings, and other events. Doing so will help you practice and exert efforts to better yourself.

What many people fail to realize is that soft skills are learned and acquired with constant practice. If you keep on applying it even in the most mundane things, you will eventually make it a habit. The greatest players of all time, such as Michael Jordan ad Tiger Woods would never have earned their respective titles if they did not put a lot of importance on practice. Improvements can be observed with constant practice.

Building relationships is a good thing- it can help you in the personal and professional aspects of your life. It is unimaginable to go through each day alone, without family and friends to be there for you.

But just as relationships can bring joy and fulfillment to your life, it can also be one the primary causes of stress. Since we all have different personalities, there are instances when disagreements arise, when opinions clash, and when you just cannot get along with the other person, be it your spouse, child, sibling, colleague, boss, clients, and customers. When this happens, stress would eventually develop and this could blow out of proportions if not managed properly. Keep in mind that relationship-related stress is inevitable and there is absolutely no way to get rid of it, but you can reduce stress by effectively managing it.

How can stress be managed? Let us begin by understanding that there are many factors that cause relationship-related stress. One of the keys to manage stress is to take control of these factors and not be controlled by it. Below are the most common of all:

1.Taking advantage of the other person’s weaknesses

2.Using abusive words

3.Shouting at the other person

4.Giving offensive remarks

5.Being rude

6.Lying and cheating

7.Causing bodily harm

8.Refusing to speak to the other person

9.Spreading rumors about the other person

10.Intentionally avoiding the other person

Secondly, it is also essential for you to have a mindset that looks to adapt to the person and the situation, whenever necessary. Many people have difficulty dealing with others because they refuse to change themselves for them and instead, they wait for the other person to change or simply wish for the situation to go away. Husbands and wives complain about their spouse’s annoying habits but tend to overlook their own shortcomings; employees criticize their co-workers and superiors for the way they perform their tasks and responsibilities and yet they fail to check their own abilities to see if there are areas they need to improve on. A person needs to accept that in order to have better relationships, he has to be the first one to change and adapt, and never the other way around. Hoping and wishing that things will turn out for the best without you exerting efforts to actually make it happen is only going to cause undue stress.

Lastly, engage yourself in fun and worthwhile activities that will ease tensions from work and personal life. Hitting the gym can be a good stress buster. If the people around you are causing you too much stress, it is best that you take some time out away from them. A short vacation is ideal however if the circumstances will not allow this, you can always spend an afternoon someplace quiet all by yourself to give you time to gather strength and rethink about how you can deal with the troubling situation.

Have you ever wondered why some people get more recognition than others? Do you know why there are individuals who are able to successfully climb their way up the career ladder even though you seem to have the same skill set? What makes them so different, anyway? The answer is professionalism.

Professionalism comprises a set of behaviors that makes a person behave in an appropriate manner in the workplace. A person who shows professionalism consistently is regarded well among colleagues and superiors because of the following reasons:

1. It builds credibility. A person with a high level of professionalism is honest and hard working, which make it easier for others to deem him trustworthy.

2. It shows good work ethics. These people do not let personal issues affect them at work; they exert a lot of efforts when working on every task handed out to them to ensure excellent outcomes even when they are at their worst times.

3. It increases productivity. People who are professional do not waste time doing senseless things in the office. They manage their time wisely to ensure completion of tasks without comprising the quality of their outputs.

Indeed, professionalism will give others a better perception of you. As you probably know, how others see you is very important. If you are often thought of as a person who does not exert enough effort in doing your job, you are placed at a disadvantage because this means that they are not convinced in you and your ability to contribute to the success of the business. On the other hand, if they see you as someone who is highly professional in the way you carry yourself at work, it means that they trust you and look up to you as a role model in the company.

How does a person show professionalism at work?

Never come to work late. A professional is always punctual, whether it is a regular day at work, a meeting, or a business dinner. Tardiness can seriously hurt your image.

Treat others with respect. It does not matter if it is the CEO or a lowly employee- you have to respect them and treat them well.

Do not be too personal in the workplace. Being overly friendly and showing emotional weaknesses are not going to help in making you become professional. When everybody else knows most of the details of your personal life then you are not showing signs of professionalism at all.

Admit mistakes and be accountable. In the same way that you always exert your best efforts at work, do not be afraid to admit to your mistakes too and commit to doing a better job next time.

Also, it is worth mentioning that one of the things that are very indicative of professionalism is the way you dress. You have to dress appropriately. You cannot expect others to see you as someone who is professional if you wear sloppy clothes in the office. Again, remember that how others see you matters a lot. Make sure to choose what you wear carefully; crisp, neat, and smart-looking clothes can boost your professional image.
